I am a fan of well-written science-fiction, and was looking forward to read this. And in a near-dystopian Blade Runner-esque future, a genetically engineered fast food waitress sees a movie based on Cavendish's unfortunate internment in a Hull retirement home. In this day and age of spectacle and action it was not surprising really.

Breaking up the stories into interwoven episodes does result in a certain amount of scrabbling back to earlier chapters to remind oneself of how the story was left. The author presents us with a series of interconnected vignettes, which all sort of tie in loosely, though perhaps not positively enough to give a sense of satisfaction, and readers are left to draw their own conclusions about the meaning behind the birthmark.

And I don’t see the “deepness.” There are references of reincarnation but they are vague and seemingly unimportant to the story.
Not all the threads quite connect but nonetheless Mitchell binds them into a quite spellbinding rumination on human nature, power, oppression, race, colonialism and consumerism.
