I could picture myself sitting at their dinner table. I'd recommend the book to mature adults, I almost gave it a lower rating due to the bad language, too many F-bombs in it--- I found this unnecessary. Like Dirie herself, though, the combination is intriguing, powerful, and unique. From the deserts of Somalia to the world of high fashion, she battles against oppression and emerges a real champion. Hopefully one day women's lives there will be better and the female genital mutilation will end. It is also a well-told and truly engaging autobiography with an old-fashioned, Algeresque appeal: obscure African camel-tender becomes internationally admired (and vindicated) high-life heroine. On the other hand, I have to admit that Scott really made me care about these characters - except for the one Sam chooses. Despite her later acquired fame and wealth, she never forgets where she came from, she still has sincere love for the simplicities in life, and still prefers to live a nomadic life wherever possible. Again with the way this story ended left me wanting more. If you're a seller, Fulfillment by Amazon can help you grow your business. Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2016. Angela totally outdone herself in "Desert Flower… I don't often read non-fiction and I usually avoid memoirs and biographies as there are few people that I'm intrigued enough about to make reading about their whole lives worthwhile. This is a wonderful book written by a woman who grew up, Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2016.

This is book two of a great series. Sell everything, buy a boat, and sail around the world. Instead of medicating myself, I decided to pick up a pen, write down everything those voices tell me, and turn it into a book. Such an excellent story, told with such honesty and bravery; bravery for.

Raised in a nomadic Somali family, apparently raped at age four and then mutilated in a female circumcision ritual at age five, Dirie bravely ran away from home at thirteen to avoid being married off to an old man.

Her relationship with her brother was slowly killing me. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

Powerful. I liked everything about this book. If God had wanted those body parts missing, why did he create them?

It is a true biography following the author's life as she escapes from Somalia to England and struggles there on her own.

The tale of a courageous woman's struggles to come to terms with her Somali childhood, including her experience of female genital mutilation (FGM). Download it once and read it on your Kindle device, PC, phones or tablets. She was having none of that!

However this story really does open your eyes and makes you realise what children pretty much babies and women have to go through. Frustration and anguish gripped me yet again. Or westerns. Sam (Samantha), Carson, &Turner are three of the main characters in this book. She has lived through sexual abuse, betrayal, murder, but has also learned how strong famil. Still, quite good with an important message.

It was harrowing in many places and yet somehow, against all odds, she has not only survived but emerged resilient. Horrifica. The book is fascinating reading and except for a couple of very brief breaks, I could not put the book down until after I read it cover to cover. Be the first to ask a question about Desert Flower. I do suggest reading the books in order so you don't get lost, as the first book will give you all the background. Soon thereafter, she ended up in a James Bond movie (the terrible one with Timothy Dalton) and appeared in calendars, major magazines, and Revlon ads worldwide. The remarkable story of Waris Dirie's struggle for freedom is an inspiration. Traveling for days without food and water, she made her way to Mogadishu and later to London as a servant to her uncle, the Somalian ambassador. Dirie's story really shocked me. By age five, however, she had been introduced to FGM, the practice that would ensure her marriageability (and thus her marketability) in Somali culture. Great book, fascinating life story and written very well. But they can express the power and bold resolve in Waris to tell her story in spite of the danger associated! (In spite the profanity), Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2018. "Desert Flower" takes place when our MC, Sam, is around 19 and it was just too... too... too something for me to enjoy. Even through a long and difficult path she eventually becomes an international supermodel and an ambassador to the UN, she is not impressed by wealth or material goods or her own rise in status. It's easy to forget that Dirie's memoir is a book about someone whose success has come from posing for the camera. Her story is humbling. This whole story is an emotional roller coaster that sometimes I wanted to get off and pretend I'd never experienced it in the first place. Two, is downright cruel. Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2016. Waris had an extraordinary story to tell but the narration left much to be desired.

First and foremost, this was a DNF for me, so my rating doesn't reflect the whole book, just the first half I did read.

He just never came across as more than cardboard.

Things, that really shouldn't happen to anyone, sadly DO happen. Dirie's beauty led her to a career as a fashion model; her experience as a young girl subjected to circumcision led her to speak out against the practice and eventually become a human rights ambassador to the United Nations. A story that will reduce even the hard hearted to tears.

The most compelling portions of Dirie's story are her graphic portrayals of the practice of female genital mutilation and the impact it has on women who long to control their bodies and their lives. But fixing the wrongs of the past takes time, and learning to forgive one's self is damn near impossible. Read Desert Rice first. Certainly worth the read. Dirie endured a great many trials and tribulations -- finding her way to Mogadishu and to her long-lost relatives, a string of unsuccessful living arrangements, working as a maid in London and then as kitchen help in McDonalds with minimal English language or literacy. The remarkable story of Waris Dirie's struggle for freedom is an inspiration. I will be encouraging staff members to read this story.
