I need to confess that I have, historically, not been a fan of Mary Kubica books. It is probably because I am so resistant to change that I initially felt a tremendous amount of sympathy for — and, by connection, attachment to — the protagonist in The Other Mrs., the most recent novel by the increasingly prolific Mary Kubica.

So, it left me really thinking: is this one, satisfying twist enough? So the couple moved, putting distances between themselves and Will’s betrayal and honoring Will’s sister’s likely wishes that her daughter, Imogen, have the opportunity to finish growing up in the small town she had always known. The move to the island is supposed to be a "fresh start" for emergency room physician Sadie Foust, her professor husband Will and their sons, Otto, 14, and Tate, 7. Nettled by several errors in Heavner’s analysis, and even more by her willingness to share the gory details at a press conference, Tempe launches her own investigation, which is not so much off the books as against the books. Diana realizes that Cole, a fellow student in her watercolor class, isn’t the stranger she’d thought he was.

Following the twist I had seen coming was a secondary twist.

Mary Kubica’s skill at melding the family drama with the psychological thriller takes another leap with The Other Mrs. A marriage and a family are on the verge of imploding. After all, Phoebe already has enough to worry about.

For the preceding 7/8th of the novel, reading felt arduous. What started out as flawed and damaged became obnoxious and whiny. Yet, I keep reading them. But, sadly, my enjoyment of the book very quickly dwindled. Exposed as a womanizer and rapist, he’s left her little choice but to hunker down inside her mansion to escape the glare of public shame. Forget about solving all these crimes; the signal triumph here is (spoiler) the heroine’s survival. THRILLER SUSPENSE

Dickson’s debut novel swoops and swirls through startling plot twists and multiple perspectives, opening doors into the dark secrets lurking in her characters’ pasts. Though Sadie insists she knows nothing about what happened to Morgan — in fact, she barely knows Morgan at all — there is evidence to the contrary. I didn’t buy it.
