To achieve lasting change, we must first understand the population of families that are working hard but falling short in each of our communities and across Florida. The composition of the ALICE population is men and women, young and old, of all races. They often earn too much to qualify for government assistance, and there is no room in their household budget for emergency expenses. ALICE lives in every county in Pennsylvania -- rural, urban and suburban -- and are vital to our economy. The ALICE population represents those among us who are working, but due to child care costs, transportation challenges, high cost of living and so much more are living paycheck to paycheck.
In the five years since the Michigan Association of United Ways has released its first ALICE Report, Michigan residents have started to get a clearer picture of their neighbors, loved ones, friends, and … United Way of Florida has an ongoing commitment to providing accurate, relevant information on the at-risk population of Floridians, and releases an updated Report on a bi-annual basis. United Ways wanted to give this population a voice to talk about the hardships they are facing. ALICE represents the 24% of Pennsylvanians who work, but struggle to survive. What is the ALICE Report? ALICE earns above the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), but makes less than what’s needed to afford basic essentials.
The ALICE Report places a spotlight on a large population of hardworking residents who work yet have little or no savings, and are one emergency from falling into poverty.
