We can do better. Barack Obama Speech Transcript on George Floyd Death & Protests, Congressional Testimony & Hearing Transcripts. I want you to know that you matter. America. Even after San Bernardino, they’ve refused to make it harder for terror suspects who can’t get on a plane to buy semi-automatic weapons. Those oftentimes may be elected as well. John Lewis was getting something inside his head, an idea he couldn’t shake that took hold of him – that nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience were the means to change laws, but also change hearts, and change minds, and change nations, and change the world. At the ripe old age of 25, John was asked to lead the march from Selma to Montgomery. There’s a lot of resilience, there’s a lot of strength, but there’s also a lot of pain. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedience's sake. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/19/us/politics/obama-speech.html We need to develop new technologies that make guns safer. And I’m now a lot older. too often, some of that violence has come from folks who were supposed to be serving and protecting you. And let me begin by acknowledging that, although all of us have been feeling pain, uncertainty, disruption, some folks have been feeling it more than others. So he helped organize the Nashville campaign in 1960. Barack Obama: (14:02) Like John, we have got to fight even harder for the most powerful tool we have, which is the right to vote. If a child can’t open a bottle of aspirin, we should make sure that they can’t pull a trigger on a gun. (Applause.) Barack Obama: (00:03) Two United States Senators -– Joe Manchin, a Democrat from West Virginia, and Pat Toomey, a Republican from Pennsylvania, both gun owners, both strong defenders of our Second Amendment rights, both with “A” grades from the NRA –- that’s hard to get — worked together in good faith, consulting with folks like our Vice President, who has been a champion on this for a long time, to write a common-sense compromise bill that would have required virtually everyone who buys a gun to get a background check. What inspired me more than anything as a young man was to see what you and Reverend Lawson and Bob Moses and Diane Nash and others did.” And he got that kind of – aw shucks, thank you very much. They are the outcomes not just of the immediate moments in time, but they’re the result of a long history of slavery and Jim Crow and red lining and institutionalized racism that too often have been the plague, the original sin of our society. Now, there are some who question the scale of our ambitions - who suggest that our system cannot tolerate too many big plans. It wasn’t the first time I had to talk to the nation in response to a mass shooting, nor would it be the last. We will not apologize for our way of life, nor will we waver in its defense, and for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you. He and other young men and women sat at a segregated lunch counter, well-dressed, straight-backed, refusing to let a milkshake poured on their heads, or a cigarette extinguished on their backs, or a foot aimed at their ribs, refused to let that dent their dignity and their sense of purpose. There are organizations like Campaign Zero and Color Of Change and others that are out there highlighting what the data shows, what works, what doesn’t in terms of reducing incidents of police misconduct and violence. We see it in everybody doing the hard work of overcoming complacency, of overcoming our own fears and our own prejudices, our own hatreds. God bless you all. And the girls were spared. “Once you learn something,” she told her son, “once you get something inside your head, no one can take it away from you.”. He believed that in all of us, there exists the capacity for great courage, that in all of us there is a longing to do what’s right, that in all of us there is a willingness to love all people, and to extend to them their God-given rights to dignity and respect. As Ronald Reagan once said, if mandatory background checks could save more lives, “it would be well worth making it the law of the land.” The bill before Congress three years ago met that test. Our challenges may be new. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition. Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. And I hope that more retailers and more manufacturers join them — because they should care as much as anybody about a product that now kills almost as many Americans as car accidents. I’m not asking people to have that same level of courage, or sacrifice, or love. In this room right here, there are a lot of stories. Number one, anybody in the business of selling firearms must get a license and conduct background checks, or be subject to criminal prosecutions. And I told him, “John, I am here because of you.” On Inauguration Day in 2008, 2009, he was one of the first people that I greeted and hugged on that stand. I was proud that John Lewis was a friend of mine. With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come. They have something to tell us today, just as the fallen heroes who lie in Arlington whisper through the ages. (Applause.) Thanks to a great medical team, her wonderful husband, Mark — who, by the way, the last time I met with Mark — this is just a small aside — you may know Mark’s twin brother is in outer space. You can find it on Obama.org. So it must be with this generation of Americans. Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. He hadn’t made a bad decision. You want to honor John? To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society's ills on the West - know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. Less measurable but no less profound is a sapping of confidence across our land - a nagging fear that America's decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights. But it failed because 90 percent of Republicans in the Senate voted against that idea. Number three, every city in this country should be a My Brother’s Keeper community because we have 250 cities, counties, tribal nations who are working to reduce the barriers and expand opportunity for boys and young men of color through programs and policy reforms, public private partnerships. You can imagine the conversations they had afterwards. And the thing is, I imagine initially that day, the troopers thought that they had won the battle. And by the way, it happens on the streets of Chicago every day. For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. And this is just a small sample. But he and Hosea Williams and others led them across that bridge anyway. The snow was stained with blood. Read the full transcript here. He as much as anyone in our history brought this country a little bit closer to our highest ideals. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness. Barack Obama participated in a virtual town hall in which he spoke about George Floyd’s death and the following protests. And if we do, we’ll leave behind a nation that’s stronger than the one we inherited and worthy of the sacrifice of a young man like Zaevion. (Applause.). So a lot of our work is to prevent people from hurting themselves. It’s why he spilled his blood. Because our right to worship freely and safely –- that right was denied to Christians in Charleston, South Carolina. Turn on desktop notifications for breaking stories about interest? It is mayors and county executives that appoint most police chiefs and negotiate collective bargaining agreements with police units, and that determines police practices in local communities. Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began. (Applause. How did this become such a partisan issue? Let me just close by saying this, I’ve heard some people say that you have a pandemic, then you have these protests. All of us need to stand up and protect its citizens. We are the keepers of this legacy. We all believe in the First Amendment, the guarantee of free speech, but we accept that you can’t yell “fire” in a theater. And all this we will do. We cannot treat voting as an errand to run if we have some time. What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them - that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply. And at every stop, through the night, apparently the angry driver stormed out of the bus and into the bus station. But the testing of his faith produced perseverance. And yet, at this moment - a moment that will define a generation - it is precisely this spirit that must inhabit us all. Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. (Applause.) And that’s why we’re going to invest $500 million to expand access to treatment across the country. This is the journey we continue today. This idea that any of us, ordinary people, a young kid from Troy can stand up to the powers and principalities and say no this isn’t right, this isn’t true, this isn’t just. And we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age. Not from turning on each other, but by turning towards one another. But today we witness with our own eyes police officers kneeling on the necks of Black Americans. Try Rev for free and save time transcribing, captioning, and subtitling. I should add, by the way, that the original task force report was done several years ago, since that time we’ve actually collected data, in part because we implemented some of these reform ideas, so we now have more information and more data as to what works. (Applause.) But our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions - that time has surely passed. If we want our children to grow up in a democracy – not just with elections, but a true democracy, a representative democracy, a big-hearted, tolerant, vibrant, inclusive America of perpetual self-creation – then we are going to have to be more like John. Except this time, there were some cameras there. At a moment when the outcome of our revolution was most in doubt, the father of our nation ordered these words be read to the people: "Let it be told to the future world...that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive...that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet [it].".
