I read it with keen interest and ended up buying it in paperback along with the following two of the series, which I completely ignored until that moment. I always assumed that the mind had just taken Horza's name. Friends Who Liked This Quote. A Chekhov's Gun. SERBIAN WOMEN ARE WAITING TO PLAY D&D WITH YOU! this was my first banks novel of any kind. Sadly, I almost entirely agree with the esteemed Mr Ducker above (ie read the non sf novels, abandon the sf ones, except OHMIGOD Whit is where he started going downhil, read The Bridge, which Mr IMB himself I think has ackowleged is way his best. It was written first, and the Culture setting was developed to be the background for that story. I'd Rather Not, Thanks. I started out of sequence, with The Player of Games, which was a fun read (but fun in spite of, rather than because of, the political/philosophical soapboxing).

I love Banks, but when I read his books I think I'm looking for and getting vastly different things than you are. i thought it was going to be part of a series with teh charracters developing and making further apprences, but clearly not. My view is that his was a life cut too short as the next culture novel that will no longer get written would had ben his best. Something about it makes me want to give it another try, but I suspect it's just nostalgia and so I've never bothered to tack down a copy.I want to like Banks because lots of clever people say that he's a great scifi writer, but I don't recall enjoying any of his books -- with or without an M -- so I've given up trying. Something about it makes me want to give it another try, but I suspect it's just nostalgia and so I've never bothered to tack down a copy. All sufficiently prolific creators have some misses. Just came across Clute's original reviews of Banks in. Ultimately, it's a story without a surprising conclusion, and with more than a few gaping plot holes and long-winded digressions. it did take me a few months to read as i am not a fast or consistent reader. I think that the irony of Consider Phlebas as he himself looks to windward has been lost to many here. Nuff saud. However, ultimately it could have been completely left out for all the difference it made to the final outcome. The Big Picture: On the Origins of Life, Meaning, and the Universe Itself by Sean Carroll “Highly recommend anything by Sean Carroll”.
The parcel should arrive with the mail in a couple of days, then I'll keep reading further. Out of respect for Horzas sacrifice. CP is fantastic. i haven't read it for quite some time, but what exactly happened at the end, horza somehow infused his mind into the ship's AI? Thank you. the names of ships and characters. Consider Phlebas, who was once handsome and tall as you.” ― T.S. I'd definitely recommend you start with 'Player of Games' or 'Use of Weapons' instead.I also found Consider Phlebas really dull, which was a hug disappointment for me because I'd long loved Iain M Banks - both in his Sci-fi incarnation and his literary works (Stonemouth and The Wasp Factory are brilliant. Compelling picture of a grand, semi-utopian galactic future. Yet the non-M., non-SF Banks is one of my absolute favorite writers; have you read any of those books? I think I will give Banks' SF one more chance, probably, Right. I don't think my advice will be very useful to you. Well, I'm a Banks fan and I've even reread. This comment has been removed by the author. Consider Phlebas was the first Banks I read, around 1995, when a friend loaned it to me to help me prepare for my upcoming Traveller campaign. In between chapters 1 & 2, I sought out and watched the BBC's 1996 adaptation of Banks' The Crow Road, to see if a different genre might let me see what others seemed to appreciate in his works. In fact many of the later ones seem to smack of mimicking it. And the answer there turns out to be yes, it is viable, and its philosophy is no less human than the Idirans'. “Valley of the Cracked Helm” Available Now! Consider Phlebas ' topic is, admittedly, a more serious and sombre one than The Algebraist 's, but that difference doesn't excuse the earlier novel's humorlessness. But I'm not sure when that will be, since I find myself strangely reluctant to pick up the Culture books I haven't read yet (. https://ludoskill.blogspot.com/2020/09/ludo-skill.html, Dragon’s Lair Comics and Fantasy®. ....and as for the "poor prose', that's a LOL. Future History, Part 1 of 3: The 21st Century, A Hamsterish Hoard of Dungeons and Dragons, How to Start a Revolution in 21 Days or Less, No Mean City Session 1.1 "National Express".

I didn't really get the feeling that the main question was "is the Culture a good thing or a bad thing?" For sheer volume of cute/funny Ship names/personalities, Excession is the way to go, half the book is Ships meeting and talking to each other. As a sign of respect or because of an eccentric sense of humour.

DMSGuild Witch Project: 5e Witches, Part 2, Mausritter and a Resource Management Link Retrospective, The Buffalo Head Shaman - A "Colony of Death" Extra, Orcs! I don't think I can add much to what you've already had in the comments, except to say that I wasn't very sold on Consider Phlebas, but Use of Weapons, Player of Games and Excession are three of my favourite books. I totally agree. I just like to live in a space world, in my imagination. Don't give up on Banks on the basis of that book alone! i liked the scale and granduer of the setting. I didn't feel it really went much further than that. "Excession" for when the Culture runs into something that they don't understand and it freaks their shit.
It has (obviously) been a long time since I read this book, baeraad, so I'm not sure I can offer a very coherent response to your observation - it makes sense, but I think I'd have to read the book again to say anything in response one way or another.

Well, we already know we disagree about the merits of the humour in. It's presented as if it were a meaningful part of the plot, the full relevance of which will presumably be revealed later. or the mind transferred it there?

That it was so affected by the senselessness of the whole episode it sort of saw Bora Horza's point of view. The morals of what the Culture does gets questioned once or twice, but the main question seems to me to be, "is the Culture viable - or will it inevitably collapse under the weight of its own denial of what human nature really is?" Poetic Licence – Iain M. Banks' Consider Phlebas and T.S. For a better experience, please enable JavaScript in your browser before proceeding. I found it to be tedious, boring and poorly-written. Even in the most difficult, most hopeless situations, people make jokes--it is a fundamental human fact. I am not sure I agree with your description of what the book is really about (though I admit that it's very much something you can have different opinions on - I'm getting the impression that Banks put an honour in being subtle with his messages). It didn't help. However, I found that to be equally rambling, irrelevant, and plodding. E.g., there's one particular sub-plot in The Crow Road (and I don't think I'm giving away too much of a plot point here) that involves one of the main characters accidentally burning down one of the other main character's father's barns when they were children.
