Learning of Dexter's love for her, he has his fellow con artist Jake Finner (Patrick Hartigan), "fearless, lawless and godless", drug the young man's drink and has him kidnapped, tied up, and placed on the next outgoing whaling vessel, hoping never to see him again.
Richard Widmark, who does not appear for the first few reels, is his First Mate, Dan Lunceford. The film contains semi-documentary footage of whalers at work, and was shot on historic locations in Massachusetts, New England, most notably in New Bedford, and at the Apponegansett Meeting House in Dartmouth.
Richard Widmark never, for some reason, strikes me as a tremendous presence on film, even though he was a tremendous star, particularly in the 1950s. In many ways, Captain Joy recaps some of the same aspects of Barrymore’s much earlier role in, It is strange to me why in this day so many good films are still not available to the general public in any convenient means. The film's title was used for, but was not related to, a film by Twentieth Century Fox in 1948 and released in 1949. Whaling ship captain Bering Joy takes his grandson Jed on a whaling trip to teach him core life values while First Mate Dan Lunceford is tasked with tutoring Jed.
The conversation during this scene between the Captain and his grandson shows the limits of Captain Joy’s wisdom, making it clear that the benefits of his lengthy experience end once he disembarks. Because of their disappearance, it is rumored that Dexter and Dot joined the Oregon Wagon Train and have gone west together. Miles out to sea, Dexter is untied and immediately put to work. I’m no online genius but it seems the costs to 20th Century Fox would be pretty minimal to put this up on iTunes or something similar.
Directed by Elmer Clifton. Down to the Sea in Ships is a 1922 American silent romantic drama film about a 19th-century Massachusetts whaling family.
Captain Charles W. Morgan (William Walcott) is a well-respected businessman who owns a fleet of whaling ships in the Quaker town of New Bedford, Massachusetts. At the end of the 19th century, Massachusetts whaling ship captain Bering Joy takes his grandson Jed on a whaling expedition. The old captain wants to teach his spoiled grandson real life values such as honesty, courage, wisdom, fairness and hard work.At the same time, First Mate Dan Lunceford is entrusted with tutoring the boy in his schoolwork.A small competition and rivalry starts when both men,Captain Joy and First Mate Lunceford, strive to become young Jed's male role model.Captain Joy may have the wisdom dictated by his life's experiences but young Jed's imagination is rather captivated by Dan Lunceford's seafaring tales. Perhaps most well known are The Alamo, Cheyenne Autumn, and How the West Was Won. Critics gave it low marks, but several went out of their way to praise Bow's performance.[3]. The film's title comes from Psalm 107, verses 23–24. Captain Joy is show literally memorizing from a reference book answers to Jed’s questions. One day, a childhood friend of Patience's, Allan Dexter (Raymond McKee) arrives in town, recently back from college. Later on it becomes clear that First Mate Lunceford would immediately be able to answer. Like the series of Dagwood Bumstead. He goes to ask Captain Morgan for permission to marry Patience, but Captain Morgan turns him out of the house, informing him that he is not a suitable husband for her because he is neither a Quaker nor a whaler. Meanwhile, Jake Finner, who has killed the captain and taken over the ship, finds Dot, discovers she is a girl, and attacks her. It is one of his earliest and also one of his lesser known, not even being available on DVD or online as of this writing. Surely at this point films like Down to the Sea in Ships don’t merit (and won’t get) a release on standard DVD, much less blu-ray.
So, do I recomend it?
Joy’s strength lies in his reliance on tradition, and the ways he has always done things. Meanwhile, Samuel Siggs (J. Thornton Baston), an effeminate Chinese man masquerading as a white man, connives to steal Captain Morgan's ships to transport African gold. Hope it will be released on DVD. And quite a hermit. The story of the silent historical "drama" is so old and cliched people living in the stone age would have been bored and found it predictable. Hathaway does a fantastic job in conveying a great sense of action (the action scenes are amazing for the time) and leaving the symbolism of the picture somewhat subtle.

Watch one like Battleship Potemkin instead. (At this point, why wouldn’t everything be available online?) While the rest of the cast is good enough, she puts them too shame in a small role. It also adds fuel to the dichotomy which occurs later with Widmark regarding the boys education. Five Go Down To The Sea is the twelfth novel in The Famous Five series by Enid Blyton.
