Oliver Twist was the second book I read and the challenge I completed was “Books from 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die list”. Great! Though the novel deals with the England of the Industrial Revolution, it is as valuable a political critique today as it was during Dickens’s own lifetime. She is the Victorian fallen woman, who is corrupted and who contaminates all the people around her. But her love and her selflessness prove the basic goodness of her complex personality. Not my kind of read, but it’s a nice Classic! I would give it a big 100/100! Oliver Twist began to be published in a magazine in the year 1837 under Dickens’s pseudonym, Boz. Dickens’s language is beautifully evocative. Combining elements of Gothic Romance, the Newgate Novel and popular melodrama, in Oliver Twist Dickens created an entirely new kind of fiction, scathing in its indictment of a cruel society, and pervaded by an unforgettable sense of threat and mystery. She’s also very selfless and surprisingly full of love. Too bad Oliver couldn’t have been a bit better of a character though. Oliver Twist is the story of a young orphan, Oliver, and his attempts to stay good in a society that refuses to help. Olivia Twist author Lorie Langdon says on her website that she was more inspired by the musical Oliver! Like you, this isn’t exactly my thing but I’m glad it made a nice classic read for what it was. They provide a powerful insight into the social injustices and the political oppressions that the poor people were subjected to in the England of the nineteenth century. Oliver itself is not a very interesting character, I like Fagin and Nancy more. Charles Dickens used this novel as a means of social criticism after the adoption of the Poor Law of 1834. The only thing about it is that the language is quite hard. The story of the orphan Oliver, who runs away from the workhouse only to be taken in by a den of thieves, shocked readers when it was first published. 4 Stars: Really good, but could be better. Unless stated, all photos, logos, and trademarks used belong to me. Like most of Charles Dickens’s works, this book is the one with many complicated genres. It is a novel that talks about serious issues, it is a mystery story, and some chapters can even seem to belong to horror-fiction. The workhouse’s head thinks Oliver is a burden, so he sells him to a thief with a good deal. i hope you can accomplish your Classic books goal this year, its a great one! Fri 28 Sep 2012 10.00 EDT. For the space of the novel we can see society from their perspective. This book is a great way to find out about the Victorian times.
