Must I go and look for some Guru in order to receive initiation seeing that Bhagavan says he is not a Guru? It is the mind that is called the subtle body or the soul. “The Master is within; meditation is meant to remove the ignorant idea that he is only outside. Peace, joy and immortality are available to those aspirants who dedicate themselves to the practice of meditation and Self-enquiry and devotion. If one inquires as to where in the body the thought ‘I’ rises first, one would discover that it rises in the Heart. Our intense earnestness and total dedication to the goal is the most essential factor. In the centre of the cavity of the Heart the sole Brahman shines by itself as the atman (Self) in the feeling of ‘I’-‘I’. Therefore it was not enough for the sadhaka (aspirant) to know that his teaching was sublime and his presence inspiring; it was necessary to know that he was a Guru giving diksha (initiation) and upadesa (instruction). Similarly, unless the illusory nature of the perception of the world as an objective reality ceases, the vision of the true nature of the Self, on which the illusion is formed, is not obtained. There are only two ways to conquer destiny or be independent of it. If you go out as sanyasi (ascetic), a similar thought that you are a sanyasi will haunt you.
