Must I go and look for some Guru in order to receive initiation seeing that Bhagavan says he is not a Guru? It is the mind that is called the subtle body or the soul. “The Master is within; meditation is meant to remove the ignorant idea that he is only outside. Peace, joy and immortality are available to those aspirants who dedicate themselves to the practice of meditation and Self-enquiry and devotion. If one inquires as to where in the body the thought ‘I’ rises first, one would discover that it rises in the Heart. Our intense earnestness and total dedication to the goal is the most essential factor. In the centre of the cavity of the Heart the sole Brahman shines by itself as the atman (Self) in the feeling of ‘I’-‘I’. Therefore it was not enough for the sadhaka (aspirant) to know that his teaching was sublime and his presence inspiring; it was necessary to know that he was a Guru giving diksha (initiation) and upadesa (instruction). He also said that the Guru may not be external, as in his case. Similarly, unless the illusory nature of the perception of the world as an objective reality ceases, the vision of the true nature of the Self, on which the illusion is formed, is not obtained. But jnana transcends both. Although he was accessible to all alike, although questions were normally asked and answered in public, the guidance given to each disciple was nevertheless intensely direct and adapted to … Some jnanis may appear to suffer, others may be in samadhi; still others may disappear from sight before death. What exists in truth is the Self alone. If we become obsessed with this one thing – realizing Truth — Truth, a physical Guru (if necessary) and all else will be drawn to us automatically. Thus, when the mind stays in the Heart, the ‘I’ which is the source of all thoughts will go, and the Self which ever exists will shine. The way can be pointed out, directions can be given. The Self itself is the world; the Self itself is “I”; the Self itself is God; all is Siva, the Self. That which arises in this body as ‘I’ is the mind. But that makes no difference to their jnana. There are only two ways to conquer destiny or be independent of it. If you go out as sanyasi (ascetic), a similar thought that you are a sanyasi will haunt you. To the extent we behave with humility, to that extent good will result. When it remains in the Heart names and forms disappear… If the mind remains in the Heart, the ‘I’ or the ego which is the source of all thoughts will go, and the Self, the Real, Eternal ‘I’ alone will shine. As I said, from Bhagavan’s point of view there are no disciples; but from that of the disciple the Grace of the Guru is like an ocean. By observing diet-restriction, the quality of mind improves, which helps self-inquiry. Your actions will tend to follow your meditations of their own accord, Sri Ramanasramam For obtaining such knowledge the enquiry, ‘Who am I?’ in quest of the Self is the best means. It creates the body and the world and makes you think you are a grihastha .
