United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: it WILL NOT play on standard US DVD player. The film did not dwell too much on the grim conditions (the audience wanted a bit of escapism after all) but conveyed the notion that no-one knows when they will be called on to "do their bit" for victory and hopefully rise to the occasion.By the time of the release of the film the Battle of Midway had been won, the Germans had 57 tanks in North Africa and Generals January and February had taken their toll of the Germans in the Eastern Front. Nowadays most people still are aware of the evacuation from Dunkirk (Operation Dynamo) but the evacuation from Normandy and other points along the coast (Operation Ariel) is far less well known even although nearly as many British troops were brought home by Ariel as by Dynamo. It has been a decade or more since I last saw this film. Please try again. I also noted that Constance Cummings is the spitting image of Ellen Barkin. Found it rather irritating with all the slapstick. He is helped by an American woman (Constance Cummings), two British troops (Tommy Trinder and Gordon Jackson), a French mayor (Robert Morley), a passport official (Mervyn Johns), and a stationmaster (Ernest Milton).
It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness. It's based on a true story, and feels like it should be a grim but inspiring drama, but it's more of an action comedy thanks to the presence of semi-comic sidekick (despite leading man status) Tommy Trinder as a squaddie who, together with a young Gordon Jackson in his first credited role, helps dashing young foreman Clifford Evans in his mission.
