“Hellboy II: The Golden Army” (2008) was a visual feast that was written like a not-terribly-good bedtime story for a not-terribly-bright child and just about ended the general public’s interest in seeing any more of this franchise. For starters, there are some people who have commented that Harbour looks more like the comic book character than Perlman, which is rather remarkable because Perlman as Hellboy was one of the most faithful depictions of a comic book superhero on the movie theater screen. And however many fans there are of Mignola’s Lobster Johnson character, they can’t be pleased to see him look like a refugee from the 1960s Batman TV show. Indeed, there’s something oddly incomplete about the entire film, with big chunks of story feeling left out on the cutting-room floor and character developments that jump from A to Z in a flash. This version of Professor Broom (Ian McShane) is a jackass who heaps verbal abuse on his son at every turn. Over the past fifteen years, audiences have been given three Hellboy movies. It has a few worthwhile qualities, though, and that elevates it above its pointless and far too self-indulgent reboot. Go back and look at those Tim Burton Batman movies and tell me that were actually good in any objective sense.
The sardonic demon on the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.) Harbour has talked about aspects of the character, like how Hellboy can't have a sexual relationship with a human, but the weight of the concept is entirely absent from the final product, and it lacks the emotional resonance of the previous other films, which were savvy enough to put the heart of the narrative front and center with these creatures, human or otherwise. For example, it seems that Hellboy will no longer be a secret in the new Hellboy movie, which was something invented for its predecessors by their director Guillermo del Toro.
In contrast, Harbour’s depiction retains the essence of the character but manages to look more like he fits in, which is desirable because the character is very much a part of the society that he protects.
