The film is derived from The Book of One Thousand and One Nights but its story departs greatly from the tale of the same name and includes an actual historic event. It is a fairly lush period piece and should be taken for no more than that. In fact in many of the Thief films, Ahmed is the name of the prince or the thief in the 1961 version w/ Steve Reeves. Brought back memories. I remember seeing this film as a young boy and it was 15 years old then ! Lushly shot in glorious Technicolor® and featuring a cast of thousands, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves is a cinematic feast for the senses to be enjoyed time and again. This wonderful disc comes from UK & Ireland and I encourage you to BUY IT!!! Add to that Thieves' uniforms that could be spotted across the desert, harem girls in 1940's shoulder pads, and some stereotyping, lack of cultural knowledge and you have a film far less interesting than the original story.
