Popcorn Frights 2018: COLD SKIN Review – The Familiar Tale of an Unlikely Monster Starring Ray Stevenson, David Oakes, Aura Garrido Written by Jesús Olmo and Eron Sheean (screenplay) There are simply too many plot holes, too many unexplained actions, and too many actions that make no sense, to make this movie function as a standalone work.
The atmosphere that the movie builds is excellent and it will captivate you. Kinda The Descent meets Lighthouse with a Lovecraft atmosphere. The various parts of Cold Skin might remind of earlier films, but Gens uses them to build a brutal and brittle world where the shape of water is death and despair. But on shore he finds no trace of the man whom he has been sent. He’s also inexplicably outfitted the lighthouse he’s caretaker of like a medieval fortress, with wooden spikes thrusting outward all the way to the top, as if to ward off invading hordes. The only other human soul on the island is a hairy bastard named Gruner (Ray Stevenson) who serves as lighthouse keeper and is wholly disinterested in the newcomer. The story is told from many different characters points of view who are listed at the beginning of the novel and their name is repeated when they tell their side of the story.

“We’re never too far from those we hate,” says Friend, and it sums up the film’s theme rather concisely. Here, there’s no explanation why David Oakes’ young Irishman has decided to spend a year in complete isolation as the meteorologist on an island near the Antarctic Circle, though his air of angst does suggest flight from some trouble or other. Otherwise the experience is still enjoyable.
