I say 'sort of' because it was quite entertaining and creepy at points, but the ending slightly failed to deliver. I was not expecting that and they made it look super convincing. The only positive I can give is that the Scottish mans acting was great and he was very believable... the plot however was lame and went nowhere... there was not a single frightening moment apart from when one of the guys jumps up from behind a pew and makes you jump... the end left more questions than there were answers and overall it was just pretty terrible. Still, i think so many horror films get way lower ratings than they deserve. We don't know about you, but when we were reading A Prayer for Owen Meany, we couldn't believe how much attention John, our narrator, pays to every single little detail. The movie is set in small creepy church in remote part of Britain. One of my top 10 horrors of all time. I am a fan of the genre of movie that has to do with the idea of hell or demons or what other place there is in the afterlife. Everything is quite subtle even the humour and religious and life philosophy is touched upon in what seems like normal interactive banter. But what they discover is more disturbing than they had first imagined. I feel like there should have been five or so additional minutes at the end; not necessarily to "finish the ending" or "wrap up the story in a nice little package," but to just give it a chance to develop the creepiness. It's been some time since I've last seen a good British horror movie (I think it was The Devil's Business), so The Borderlands came as a nice surprise. A kinda creepy slow burning mystery would suit the description and there is not one single young attractive woman who can't run straight without falling over in it. There's something quite natural about the lead characters and its so far removed from the majority of US generic stuff that I was totally intrigued instantly. The characters are pretty dull, the story is weak and progresses too slowly, the scares are too few and too cheap (largely jump scares and false flags), and the ending is stupid. Why, for instance, does John spend so much time describing how he and Owen practice "The Shot"? The movie that tripped over before the finish line! Also, in the true found footage manner, nothing is ever explained. I don't understand the positive reviews here. Had the plot been intelligent and cleverly developed, this wouldn't have been the problem. All the characters behave just as I think people would naturally. It was a bit abrupt.Also, if anyone knows any other movies that do this, let me know what they are because I either might not wanna see them or I might have to sit there and let the train wreck happen. Literally 10 minutes of de-escalation to finish in one of the worst endings I have seen. I mean, 5.8 indicates a better-than average response doesn't it? I went into this knowing little, and that's the best way to approach it. yeah 5.8 is a fairly decent rating for a horror film but in any other genre I would avoid such a low score. Once in awhile one comes along that doesn't make me want to break my TV. It's well paced, creepy and compelling enough, and is a well made production. It really pulls you into the moment. This film is a really good example of that trend. So when they go down there Deacon and Gray are lured right to the mouth of the pagan deity itself and it digested them.The whole being eaten/digested alive by some giant thing has been an irrational fear of mine since I was little (I blame a particularly realistic-looking Jonah and the Whale movie we watched in Sunday School when I was a kid). People in found footage films tend to do silly things, and this can have an alienating effect on the audience. I didn't hate this film, but it disappointed me in scene after scene. I'd go as far as to say this is a marvel ( not the comic ) The filming style - head cameras and CCTV static cameras works amazingly well. The ending gave me serious As Above, So Below vibes and honestly I’m surprised that that film didn’t do something similar (though I’m glad they didn’t because... ugh).
