Thank God it has been recorded for cd as it is a wonderful piece of work that was lost on an ordinary movie. Many people forget that Raise the Titanic is, first and foremost, a spy film. I don’t normally purchase soundtracks without having seen the film. Like most of their works, they have to grow on you. I didn't even realise it had been written by John Barry, but when I listened to my cd, it is definitely the work of JB. The Sicilian Defence / Southby / "The Mountain Comes to Us", To Cornwall / "All That's Left" (Memories of the Titanic), Finding the Cornet / Spy on Board / The Smoke Stack, Gene Explores the Titanic / Deep Quest Trapped, Russian Threat / The Titanic Enters New York Harbor, "Thank God for Southby" / In the Graveyard / End Titles. As with so often many of the films John Barry scored, the scores for the movies far outclass the actual movies themselves! It was a montage of black & white photographs depicting the construction, the launching and the setting sail of the Titanic on its maiden voyage. This is too bad, since the adventures of Dirk Pitt have been so good that to make films from them could easily spawn a multi-billion dollar franchise. Without the score, the film might have wilted away and lost the epic perspective necessary for a tale of espionage and massive scientific accomplishments. Listening to this not only brings back memories of the movies highlights but it also embellishes on them. I still remember the first time I saw RAISE THE TITANIC. In "Main Title / The Mine Shaft", however, we are presented with the classic Barry style: brooding horns with lyrical strings performing in an almost dreamlike manner. It is indeed a masterpiece and a must have CD for movie score collectors. Sans the horns, the cue will still send shivers up your spine. The movie was so-so (the book is always better!) But having waited 13 years and only getting a short suite was not going to satisfy those desperately needing this score. So Nick Raine, who had worked as Barry's orchestrator, once again reunited with the City of Prague Philharmonic orchestra to record the complete score to Raise The Titanic nearly 20 years after the film was released. Highly recommended. As a fan of the film, I'm in a bit of a minority group, but whatever you may say about the film you can't ignore the sheer beauty of the soundtrack. Although not the real soundtrack from this great movie,it is excellant, and it must be considered that this particular dvd has 2 advantages, it is affordable, and it is available, 2 very big plusses, as this is an extremely hard John Barry dvd to find.I completely enjoyed it as I did the movie, yes, over and over.I'm very glad I could find it at a affordable price, and availability. If you liked the movie, and the soundtrack this will not disappoint. What impressed me most about the entire film was its prologue. This Is why John Barry is one of the greatest Movie composers. Then due to massive demand from Barry's fans and Barry himself! Highly recommended. One of the most highly sought-after John Barry scores has finally seen the light of day. John Barry's score seems more inspired by the actual tragedy of the Titanic and the unknown dangers of the cold Atlantic waters. From almost the first note this music in instantly recognised as that of the great John Barry who unfortunately is no longer with us. Beginning with a rousing prelude similar to his fanfare from The Black Hole, we are presented with the main theme of the Titanic, which is a very optimistic theme - with no hint of the disaster to come. Many people forget that Raise the Titanic is, first and foremost, a spy film. The vinyl pressing is good with virtually no ticks or pops and all this at an extremely good price. I have no complaints about this recording and I enjoy it very much. Directed by Jerry Jameson.
In this short yet effective composition John Barry captured the majesty of the Titanic, the romanticism of the sea and the mystique of Britain's maritime heritage in what I consider to be one of the best pieces of film scoring in motion picture history. But in the last 20 minutes of the film (or the last 4 tracks on the album), the title theme is magnificent. The music of the movie is superb - another John Barry triump (Zulu, Bond Film). Without the score, the film might have wilted away and lost the epic perspective necessary for a tale of espionage and massive scientific accomplishments. Please try again. A really nice soundtrack by John Barry. But one thing that did come from the film was Barry's score which can easily stand alone as a shining example of his scoring style around 1980. The montage was accompanied by a hauntingly beautiful piece of music composed by John Barry. With Jason Robards, Richard Jordan, David Selby, Anne Archer. I finally found a small selection of the piece on another John Barry's CD "Out of Africa, The Classic".
The complete underscore intersperses Barry's trademark broad thematic lines with appropriately murky tones, Bond-like suspense riffs, mournful strings... and a sea shanty! I remember seeing Raise The Titanic years ago, but the only thing I can recall from the movie is the music.
