Alexander argues that criminals convicted by our justice system face the same obstacles- legal discrimination and disenfranchisement- African Americans faced during the Jim Crow era. But with no money and a different system of justice for a poor black man in the South, Hinton was sentenced to death by electrocution.

And it has been structured against African Americans for there is nothing to stop the police from fulfilling their arrest quotas by going into poor black neighbourhoods and carrying out stop and searches, then arresting young black men for any infraction of the law.
